Abstract

Smartphones have become an integral part of children’s and adolescents’ daily lives, supporting communication, education, entertainment and social interaction. However, excessive or problematic smartphone use may negatively influence several dimensions of well-being. This paper examines the potential impact of smartphone addiction—more cautiously described in the literature as problematic smartphone use (PSU)—on children’s physical, psychological and social well-being. The study adopts an exploratory and descriptive research design based primarily on secondary evidence from peer-reviewed studies, systematic reviews and international health guidance. The literature indicates that problematic smartphone use is associated with poorer quality of life and well-being, sleep disturbances, psychological difficulties and reduced opportunities for physical activity and face-to-face interaction. The relationship is complex and may vary according to age, purpose of use, family environment, individual characteristics and patterns of use. The paper identifies important research gaps, including inconsistent definitions of smartphone addiction, limited longitudinal evidence, insufficient research integrating physical, psychological and social outcomes, and a need for more evidence from developing-country contexts. The study proposes a multidimensional approach to child well-being and recommends stronger digital literacy, parental guidance, school-based awareness and healthy technology-use practices. Future empirical research should examine these relationships using validated measures and longitudinal or mixed-method designs.
